Planning a wedding is stressful enough, but what do you do when your venue cancels four months before your big day?
We talk to newlywed, Catherine, about her beautiful wedding at Quarry Farm, just south of Perth, and how she coped with a last minute venue change.
How did you and your husband meet, how long were you dating, how long were you engaged, and how did he propose?
Sam and I went to primary school together, we were dating for 7 years before we got married, and we were engaged for 3 and a half years. He proposed to me during our housewarming party after the purchase for a first house together; surrounded by friends and family. At first he nervously approached me in the bathroom and said are you going to say yes if I propose, I need to know before I propose so I don’t embarrass myself in front of all these people and then when he proposed to put the ring on the wrong hand. Haha!
How long were you planning the wedding for? Did you experience any hiccups or mishaps along the way?
It took us two years to begin planning our wedding because we had other commitments such as new careers, overseas travel and a fresh mortgage!
It took us approximately one year to plan our wedding and one of the biggest hiccups we came across was our original venue cancelling on us just 4 months out from the wedding, when we had already booked everything ready for the day.
We were quick to find another venue, because we had to be… We found that most venues were already booked around the time we were looking, we found another venue that we really loved the look of and they were really keen to help us out. Unfortunately they did not have our original wedding date free, we ended up changing the wedding to be a week earlier. This meant reprinted our invites, trying to change all of our vendors for a week earlier. Luckily most were available for the week earlier but there were some things where we had ended up losing our deposits on.
What was your favourite part of your wedding day?
I really enjoyed relaxing and being able to have a dance once all the formalities were done.
Tell us a bit about your planning experience. Were you an organised bride, let it happen bride or somewhere in between?
I tried to have things quite organised but it got to a point where I had kind of had enough! I just thought it will all work out when it comes around!
My mum also helped me contact and book a lot of my vendors which helped a lot!
What advice would you give yourself now that you wish you knew earlier?
Just relax and take in the whole day, it’s over quicker than you think.
What would have done differently?
As much effort as it was to organise and have everything come together on the day, there is nothing we would change about it.
